How can businesses change their water supplier?

There are two ways this can be achieved.

1. Inset appointment
This is where a business receives water from another undertaker at a specific site. One of the following three criteria must be met before an inset application can be considered:

 The customer uses (or is likely to use) at least 50 megalitres of water per year (a large user) in England or 250 megalitres in Wales.
 It is a site not currently being served by a licensed supplier (unserved).
 The current licensed supplier agrees to the inset.

For further information please go to the insets page on this website.

2. Water supply licensing
Business customers in England and Wales may be eligible to change their supplier. There are several criteria that businesses must satisfy in order to become eligible:
  • The total quantity of water likely to be supplied to the premises must not be less than 50 megalitres per annum. This is the threshold requirement.
  • The customer's premises must not be a household premises ie where the main use of the premises is a home.
  • The premises may only be supplied by one licensee at any time, but more than one water undertaker can supply water to the premises.
  • The layout and arrangement of your site must be classed as a single set of premises.
