How do I report a leak?

If you find a leak on the outside of your home, you should contact your water company as soon as possible. In most cases, the property owner is responsible for the supply pipe that serves their property, in the same way as they are for plumbing inside their house. If a leak occurs on this pipe, it is usually the owner's responsibility to have it repaired.

However, your water company may help you to find the leak and will usually provide assistance in carrying out the repair. You should ask your water company for information on its customer leakage repair scheme.

The water company is responsible for the water main (normally in the road outside the property), and usually for the section of supply pipe that runs from the main to the boundary of your property. This may run to a stop tap under the road or pavement. If you see a leak on the water main you can help by contacting your water company and letting them know about the leak. Most companies have a freephone number for you to use. Contact details for all the companies we regulate in England and Wales are available on our website.
