Is leakage a big problem?

The water companies manage water distribution networks with a total length of more than 330.000 km. There are almost 24 million connections to properties (and associated customer supply pipes) which can all leak. By 2010 the level of leakage will be around 35% less than the peak in 1994-95. Most companies are reporting leakage at or below their economic level, and in line with their targets.
