Companies' legal obligations

  • Water companies have a general duty to develop and maintain an efficient and economical system of water supply and to make the necessary arrangements to provide water supplies to ensure that it meets its legal obligations.
  • We monitor the companies' performance and have powers, if necessary, to take enforcement action.
  • The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency are responsible for the rules on the abstraction, supply and use of water in a drought.
