If I pay for what I use, do I need to be careful with how much water I use?
Yes, water is precious. It is not economically or environmentally sensible to meet unrestrained demand in all possible circumstances, especially in the South East. Seven companies in the region had to use hosepipe bans during 2006 to make the best use of their existing depleted resources and reduce the risk of further restrictions. A hosepipe ban helps to reduce the demand for water while raising awareness of the drought and applies to metered and unmetered customers alike.
Section 76 of the Water Industry Act 1991 allows a water company to ban or restrict the use of hosepipes or similar apparatus for the purpose of watering private gardens or washing private motor cars if it believes that a serious deficiency of water exists or is threatened. The water company must set out the precise terms of the ban. It is an offence to contravene the ban and those that do so could face a maximum penalty of £1,000.
