Why isn't there a national grid or greater use made of the canal network?

People have suggested that a network of pipes, similar to the energy national grid, would help alleviate the water shortage companies in the South East a currently facing.

Water companies already move water around to meet demand, both within their own operational areas and between companies. They seek local solutions wherever possible.

Water UK, the umbrella body working on behalf of the water industry in England and Wales has published a water resources policy briefing in response to calls for a national water grid.
