Are hosepipe and sprinkler bans necessary?

Restrictions on use are sometimes required during periods of drought. It is not economically or environmentally feasible for companies to try to meet unrestrained demand in all possible circumstances.

Unlimited water use in periods of exceptionally dry weather would contribute to local, and potentially (through global warming) much wider, harmful environmental consequences. The investment required to meet the demand would increase customers' bills.
