What is Ofwat's role in water conservation?

Companies have a duty to promote the efficient use of water amongst their customers. We enforce this duty.

We monitor each company's progress on water efficiency against four criteria:
  • is there an efficient pricing framework that provides metered customers with incentives to use water wisely?
  • is there an education programme to build awareness of the need for sensible water use?
  • is the level of company activity on efficient use of water economic?
  • is the company directing its activity at those customers who will benefit most?
Each year we publish information, at an industry level, on water companies' performance in our 'Service and delivery report 2007-08'.

In June 2008, we issued a consultation document on water efficiency targets from 2010-11 to 2014-15. The consultation closed on 20 September. We will publish our conclusions this autumn.
