Debt & disconnection figures 2002 - 03

Attached is a complete set of tables and graphs showing the information submitted to Ofwat by the water companies in response to RD20/03. RD20/03 requested information from the water companies regarding the number of water disconnections and other debt related matters, during 2002-03.

Set out below is a summary of the key points arising from the companies' submissions.

Non-domestic Disconnections (Table 1, figs 1 and 2)

Non-domestic disconnections increased by 64% during the reporting period, from 5286 to 8644 properties.

Household Disconnections (Table 2)

In the previous three years companies were asked to report the number of domestic properties which were disconnected prior to the implementation of the WIA 99, which remained without water supply. However, this year companies were asked to report the number of domestic disconnections for reasons other then non-payment of bills, for example, due to the property being void, or due to health and safety reasons.

Companies reported that 1025 domestic properties were disconnected during 2002-03. Of the 1025 properties disconnected, 834 were NWT customers. However, many companies stated that they were unable to report the number of domestic disconnections for reasons other than non-payment of bills.

Pre-claims notices (Table 3, fig 3)

The number of pre-claims notices has increased by 2%, from 4,967,889 to 5,080,013.

Claims and Judgements (Table 4, fig 4, and table 5, fig 5)

The number of Claims and Judgements issued by the industry decreased by 17% and 15% respectively
