How do I get a meter installed?
You will need to contact your water company to arrange an appointment. You may need to complete an application form. The company will then arrange to visit your property to decide if a meter can be installed and if so, where best to fit the meter. Some companies prefer to fit a meter inside, others prefer meters to be installed in a boundary box outside the house.
Since 1 April 2000, the Water Industry Act 1999 gave all household customers the right to opt for a meter free of installation charges, provided it is not impracticable for the company to do so.
Companies are expected to fit meters within 3 months of your application and your measured charges will start from the installation date. Some companies will pay compensation if they fail to meet the 3 month deadline. Contact details for all the regulated water companies are available at:
