OFWAT MAKES PUBLIC INFORMATION ON WATER COMPANIES' ACTIVITIES FOR 2002-03

Ofwat today published the information collected from the water companies in their 2002-03 annual returns. This also includes information from the Drinking Water Inspectorate and the Environment Agency.

Each year all the water companies in England and Wales provide information to Ofwat setting out their services to customers, their capital and operating expenditure figures and their performance during the last year.

The information in the annual June returns enables Ofwat to:
  • monitor companies' progress towards achieving higher quality objectives;
  • ensure that customers' standards of service are protected;
  • compare performance between companies both now and over time;
  • measure and compare their costs; and
  • prepare for the next review of price limits.

Notes
1. The 2003 June returns CD-ROM is available from the Ofwat Library on 0121 625 1373. It costs £62.50 plus VAT. This price covers Ofwat's costs. They can also be inspected free at the Ofwat library in Birmingham. To make an appointment call 0121 625 1361. The library is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
2. The information in the June return is divided into key outputs; non-financial measures; the regulatory accounts; and financial measures. The CD-ROM also contains information provided by the Environment Agency and Drinking Water Inspectorate on companies' performance in meeting their environmental and water quality obligations.
3. Philip Fletcher, the Director General of Water Services, is the economic regulator of the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. He exercises his powers in a way that he judges will allow them to carry out their functions properly, and finance them. Customers' interests are represented by WaterVoice.
4. Ofwat is currently running a pilot project of the public domain 2002 June return on the Ofwat website. We will be placing the public domain 2003 June on the Ofwat website in early 2004. It is our intention to publish the entire public domain 2004 June return on the Ofwat website. This will be available free of charge and will replace the CD-ROM.
