Geographical boundaries and reporting periods
Sewerage service and activity information is collected from the ten water and sewerage companies.
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) collects drinking water service and related activities on a company basis. The Environment Agency collects information on sewerage related services and activities on a regional basis, which roughly corresponds to the geographical area covered by each water and sewerage company. The exceptions are Environment Agency South West, which covers the same area as Wessex Water and South West Water, and Environment Agency North East which covers the area served by Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water.
Furthermore, Environment Agency Midlands' area includes small borderline areas covered by Anglian Water, Bristol Water, Dŵr Cymru Cyf. (Welsh Water), United Utilities Water and Yorkshire Water.
Where the company's service is covered by more than one Environment Agency region, then separate tables are submitted by each relevant Environment Agency office.
The June return report year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
The information from the DWI covers calendar years.
The majority of the information from the Environment Agency relates to the report year i.e. the 12 month period ending 31 March in any year; however there is an exception in Table 1(d). The Environment Agency reports on pollution incidents on a calendar year basis. This approach is consistent with their annual report, "Water pollution incidents in England and Wales".
