OFWAT SETS LEAKAGE TARGETS FOR LONDON |
Ofwat has today set mandatory leakage targets for the Thames Water area covering London.
The targets are part of an action plan agreed with the water company to address its high levels of leakage and improve the security of supply for customers.
In December 2002 Ofwat set targets for the company area outside London. The targets set today will help to bring Thames' performance into line with the rest of the industry by 2006-07.
Currently Thames Water accounts for over a quarter of all water leakage in England and Wales. By comparison, the company provides water services to only 15% of billed customers in England and Wales.
Philip Fletcher, Director General of Water Services, said:
"We have been assured by Thames that they are fully committed to resolving the twin problems of high leakage and uncertain long-term security of supplies for customers in London. The leakage targets I have announced today will help the company to make important and rapid progress.
"We will continue to monitor the work being undertaken by Thames against the agreed action plan, whilst protecting the interests of both customers and the environment."
Thames Water has now put in place leakage monitoring systems and improved its working practices. This action has enabled the company to stabilise its rising leakage. From the information provided by Thames, and independently verified, we expect 2002-03 to be the last year of leakage increases, and the targets reflect this.
Ofwat mandatory leakage targets for Thames Water including the London area are set out below:
