Ofwat secures new leakage commitments from Thames Water |
Ofwat has received new commitments from Thames Water that it will step up work on repairing leaks.
Thames Water has taken steps to increase the amount of repairs alongside plans to replace more water mains in order to reduce leakage.
In a letter to Ofwat, the company has promised to:keep the backlog of repairs to customer-reported leaks at or below 800 jobs; andcarry out 37,500 repairs to company-detected hidden leaks during 2004.
Thames has already been able to reduce the large backlog of repair jobs that had built up over summer 2003 after exceptionally dry weather caused a high number of leaks.
The extra commitments will mean 60 per cent more repairs will be carried out in 2004 than were carried out last year.Bill Emery, Ofwat's Director of Costs and Performance, said:
"It is crucial that Thames carry out work to reduce leakage in order to maintain a secure supply for their customers.
"We will closely monitor the planned work and review it if necessary."
