Ofwat welcomes business customers' views on competition |
Joint research commissioned by Ofwat and the Consumer Council for Water will be used by Ofwat in its ongoing review of competition.
The research shows that whilst most business customers (84%) are supportive of competition in principle, the same number also perceive 'barriers' to competition in the water industry. These include:- uncertainty about the way the market works; and
- the inability of new entrants to secure a low cost wholesale price.
Ofwat's Director of Regulatory Finance and Competition Keith Mason said:
"We recognise the concerns of business customers and will be launching later this month a wider consultation setting out a range of options for introducing effective competition into the water and sewerage sectors."
Notes to editors:
1. The Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) is the economic regulator of water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. It exercises its powers in a way that it judges will allow companies to carry out their functions properly, and finance them. Its duties include protecting the interests of consumers, wherever appropriate by promoting effective competition.
2. The full report detailing the findings of the research is now available on the Ofwat website at www.ofwat.gov.uk and the Consumer Council for Water website at www.ccwater.org.uk.
