OFWAT WELCOME AS WATER ACT RECEIVES ROYAL ASSENT |
Ofwat has welcomed the Government's Water Act 2003 which received Royal Assent yesterday.
The Act will make major changes to the way that the water industry is regulated, by setting up a new Regulation Authority and a Consumer Council for Water.
Philip Fletcher, Director General of Water Services, said: "We welcome the way the Act will replace the role of a single Director General of Water Services with a board. Already Ofwat has moved in this direction by appointing a board that includes independent non-executive advisory directors.
"We already treat WaterVoice, the customer watchdog, as an independent consumer representative whose views may well differ at times from our own, but welcome legislation to secure this."
The Government has given an assurance that the structures will not come into effect until after April 2005 once Ofwat has completed its price review for 2005 –2010.
Note to Editors:
The Director General of Water Services is the economic regulator of the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. He exercises his powers in a way that he judges will allow them to carry out their functions properly, and finance them. Customers' interests are represented by WaterVoice.
