When Ofwat fines a water company, what happens to the money?
Our powers to impose financial penalties on water and sewerage companies are set out in the Water Industry Act 1991, as amended by the Water Act 2003. The statutory provisions we operate under when considering financial penalties state that the money received from the company's fine must be paid to the Consolidated Fund operated by the Treasury. The money is used by the Government for spending on public services.
