Dear water supply customer
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMPETITIVE WATER SUPPLY
You may be aware that a new legal framework for competition in water supply to large business users will be implemented on 1 December 2005. This letter tells you more about that framework, so you can choose whether to take advantage of it.
The new regime
If you are likely to use at least 50,000m3 of water a year from a water company's supply system in any of your premises you may be able to choose another water supplier for those premises. New licensed water suppliers ('licensees') will be able to supply your premises with water they put into your current water company's supply system or with water they buy wholesale from that company. New licensees' details will be available on our website from 1 December 2005.
Further information
You can obtain further information on the new regime directly from Ofwat, CCWater and business customer representatives (such as Major Energy Users Council, Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, Food and Drink Federation and Chemical Industries Association).
If you want to know more, please visit Ofwat's website (www.ofwat.gov.uk) and go to the 'WSL' page. You can also ring the library (0121 625 1373) for copies of WSL consultation papers, newsletters and guidance. The Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) is the independent consumer representative. Its website (www.ccwater.org.uk) has two leaflets about water supply competition. One describes the issues around whether your premises are eligible ("Am I eligible?"). The other offers advice and questions you could ask your potential new licensee ("Negotiating contract terms with your new supplier").
If you want to talk to someone about competition, you can contact Phillip Dixon (0121 625 1445) or Alison Dedicoat (0121 625 1320) at Ofwat. Alternatively, you can telephone Teresa Evans (0121 345 1040) or Liz Foord (0121 345 1043) at the Consumer Council for Water (CCWater).
Yours sincerely
Tony Smith
